John Patrick Hortel, born December 9, 1922, age 85, of Robin Road, Waverly, Oh died peacefully Monday, January 14, 2008 at Adena Regional Medical Center in Chillicothe, Oh. after a brief illness. He was born December 9, 1922 in Ironton, Ohio. He was preceded in death by his parents, John and Ann Cecilia Hortel and a brother Edward.. Surviving are his wife of sixty-four years, Harriet Sewell Taylor Hortel., a brother Tom and wife Lois of Phoenix, Az. and a sister Rita Kimmle of Columbus, Oh., He will be deeply missed by his children, Patricia Ann Hardy and husband Lloyd of New Port Beach, Ca., John Michael Hortel and wife Judy of Chillicothe, Oh., Rebecca Jane Fueger and husband Jeff of Dayton, Oh., Thomas Charles Hortel and wife Lebonna of Cincinnati, Oh., and a multitude of grandchildren and great grandchildren. He enlisted and served his country with distinction in the Air Force as a crewman in a B-24 Liberator, surviving 39 missions in the WWII European Theater. He continued to serve in the Air Force reserves in which he attained the rank of Lt. Colonel, retiring in 1976. After returning from the war he worked as a mechanic for the C&O railroad. In 1952 he moved his family to Waverly, Ohio where he worked for the Goodyear Atomic Corporation as a maintenance worker until 1963. After several intermediate moves, the family eventually located to Cincinnati, Ohio where he worked as a millwright for 20 years at the General Motors Norwood plant. He retired from GM in 1985, enjoying neighbors and friends on Darnell Drive in Dillonvale. In 2006, he and his wife Harriet returned to Waverly, settling in the Bristol Village retirement community. Funeral services will be 10:00 A.M. Monday, January21, 2008 at the Botkin Funeral Home in Waverly with Rev. John Cooper of the Chillicothe Brookside Church officiating. Military graveside services will be 2:00 P.M. Monday at Woodland Cemetery in Ironton, Ohio. Friends may call from 2:00 to 5:00 P.M. Sunday , and from 9:00 A.M. to 10:00 A.M.
